They robbed a shop owner of much more than money but gave the community a chance to show how great TE is.
When two teenage robbers jumped Mr. Yang they took his money and the sight in one eye. The two convicted robbers are now growing up in prison where they will spend a significant chunk of their early adult years. They have been convicted for plotting, casing, then robbing Yong Yang at knife-point as he got into his delivery van back in late January. The attack left Mr. Yang virtually blind in one eye. As a result he was left unable to drive and thus unable to pick up the fresh produce he hand selected every morning from suppliers in Philadelphia before driving to his store in Berwyn. What happened next is the story of one of TE's best gifts of 2012. Within days of the attack, another successful small business owner had a simple idea: what …

Two courtroom surprises brought the sentencing hearing for one of the two convicted teenagers in the Yang's market attack and robbery to an unexpected and sudden halt Tuesday afternoon in a West Chester Courtroom. While reviewing all the facts of the case before imposing a sentence on Octavio Sandoval of Berwyn Judge Phyllis Streitel was told that Sandoval was on juvenile probation when he and an accomplice robbed Yong Yang as he got into his delivery van outside Yang's Market on January 18. The judge was also told by the Sandoval's public defender that Sandoval had been "put on restriction" while awaiting sentencing in Chester County prison. According to the defense attorney Sandoval had gotten a tattoo inside the jail, in violation of …

The second of two teenage suspects in the beating and robbery of former produce market owner Yong Yang is due in a West Chester Courtroom this morning to learn his fate. The teen who was 17 at the time of the attack in January is expected to plead guilty and accept responsibility for his actions, according to the prosecutor in the case. Chester County Assistant District Attorney Carlos Barraza tells Patch the suspect has agreed to plead guilty to robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery charges. Patch is withholding the name of the younger suspect in the case pending the outcome of the case. He was 17 at the time of the attack and his arrest. He is being tried as an adult and is presumed innocent under the law unless found otherwise by a …

Five months after a vicious attack on the owner by two teenagers Yang's Market has closed, but a new shop is already going in the space.
Just under five months after 73-year-old Yong Yang was robbed and beaten by two teenagers in the parking lot of his produce store, Yang's Market is no more. On Thursday, Yang's daughter Chae sent Patch an email confirming what passersby could already see happening. Yang's Market has closed and is being renovated after a sale to Aneu Bistro and Catering owner Meridith McLoughlin. In her email to TE Patch Chae yang says "The community may have noticed some activity outside and inside in the market. I had previously informed you that the market was to be sold to long-time employee Mark Morroney. Unfortunately, after some hard work it was decided by everyone that a different party would have to continue the business. Meridith McLoughlin, …

Daughter of robbery and beating victim tells Patch doctors are hopeful for a quicker recovery, but there's still some uncertainty.
Last Wednesday night members of the Berwyn and surrounding community raised $2,500 to help Yong Yang and his family meet expenses related to Yang’s recovery after thieves beat him and left him without sight in his left eye. One week later Yang's daughter Chae tells TE Patch that doctors are now hopeful that they can restore her dad's eye in one operation instead of multiple surgeries. According to Chae Yang Bullock, an operation scheduled for April 2 will now attempt to "1) remove scar tissue; 2) transplant a cornea; and 3) implant an artificial lens." That is an even more optimistic outlook than reported last week when Mark Morroney updated Patch on Yang's condition. Morroney, a long-time market employee and Yong Yang's former son-in-law…

His store's new owner says doctors are revising their thinking on his recovery.
As friends, customers, and fellow business owners rallied around Yong Yang wih a fundraising dinner last week, there was some more portentially good news about his health. Yang was left without sight in his left eye after being attacked, robbed and punched in the face in January as he got into his van after closing up for the night at the farmer's market that bears his name. Now Mark Morroney, Yang's former son-in-law and the store's new owner, says doctors think they may be able to restore sight in Yang's owner with one, instead of two additional surgeries. Morroney, whose purchase of the store was announced last week, tells Patch that doctors have indicated they are hoping to replace the lens in Yang's damaged eyed and repair other …

100 diners filled Aneu Bistro and Wine Bar Wednesday evening to enjoy dinner and help raise money to support Yong Yang's recovery after a brutal attack and robbery at Yang's Market next door to Aneu. Aneu owner Meridith Coyle and Berwyn Glass owner Doug Kirschner organized the dinner to help their long-time next door business neighbor. Coyle signed on as soon Kirschner approached her with the idea. "As soon as I heard he only had Medicare I knew he would be out for a lot of non-covered expenses," Kirschner tells Patch. "This event is a win-win-win. Mr. Yang gets help, everybody here gets a wonderful dinner and Aneu gets new customers who may not have eaten here before," Kirschner said at the end of an evening that had local politicians …

37 years ago Yong Yang and his daughter moved to the United States from South Korea to pursue their American Dream. 14 years ago Yang ventured out from Philadelphia where he had built a successful produce business in a very competitive marketplace to open his own farmers market in Berwyn. On January 18 in the parking lot of his suburban market, 'Mr. Yang' (as everyone calls him) was robbed, attacked, and left without sight in his left eye. Now Yong Yang is selling the Berwyn farmer's market that bears his name. The buyer is no stranger, he's Yang's long time employee and former son in-law Mark Morroney. The official announcement came from Yang's daughter Chae (who managed the market for several years before opening her own Yoga business) …

Chae Yang sent the following letter to the editor to TE Patch: Our family would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who has thought of my father after the heart breaking attack in January. The community support, led by Kim Cuthbert and Stacey Ballard has overwhelmed us. We have attempted to send everyone a short note of appreciation and I hope we have not missed anyone. My dad and I immigrated to this country more than 37 years ago with 2 suitcases of clothing. Since then, my dad has remained in Philadelphia and it’s suburbs working 6 to 7 days a week to ultimately build what is Yang’s Market. Today, he has no eyesight in his left eye due to the assault; he underwent a difficult and long surgery, which left him with no…
