Fire Companies Join Forces for Giveaway

Berwyn, Radnor, and Paoli fire companies receive dozens of smoke detectors to give away as part of huge regional prevention effort.

Representatives of three Upper Main Line fire companies joined their counterparts from more than 170 fire departments throughout the Philadelphia region Thursday morning to kick off Operation Save a Life. The program is a collaberation between 6ABC/WPVI-TV, Kidde and Home Dept to provide working smoke detectors to people who can't afford or are in need of a home smoke detector. Flaming Wire Burns Tredyffrin Lawn: Video

This is exactly why downed power lines are still so dangerous. A homeowner catches the scary scene on video as it unfolds on her front lawn.

Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, a wire that had fallen on the front lawn of a Tredyffrin Township home caught fire, the homeowner reported. According to the Fernfield Circle resident, a downed tree fell onto the wires of a utility pole overnight, causing the wire to fall across the street. The electric was turned on Tuesday afternoon and the now live wire started sparking and caught on fire, burning part of the lawn black. Luckily, the grass and leaves did not catch on fire because of wet conditions, the resident said. No injuries were reported. Tredyffrin police and Radnor firefighters responded to the scene. PECO was called to turn off the live wires.  PECO also had to deal with another flaming wire on Fernfield Circle. Houses away, a wire …

"Two" is One Key to Escaping A House Fire

Here's why the number two is at the center of this year's National Fire Prevention Week.

This is National Fire Prevention week. Fire departments all over the country, including Berwyn, Paoli and Radnor are using the theme of this year's campaign to urge you to have two exits from every room in your home. At the center of the campaign is practicin family fire escape plans and making sure everyone in your home knows two ways to get out in case of fire. In most cases that means a door and window.  It could be different for every room in every home, so fire departments urge you to actually make-and practice- family fire escape plans. You can read much more about how to plan and practice and what to think about NOW before disaster strikes here on the Berwyn Fire Company website. Fire Companies Plan Open Houses As part of their …

Cause Ruled Out In Mansion Fire

There are no indications of criminal causes in the Villanova fire.

Investigators of the April 4 fire that destroyed an historic Villanova mansion are saying that construction taking place at nearby Agnes Irwin School was not the cause. Main Line Media News reports that construction crews had been using explosives in the laying of a foundation for a new building. Radnor Police superintendent William Colarulo said nothing indicates that the fire had criminal origins, the newspaper reported. See a gallery of Bloomfield on the day after the fire. Read about the history of the mansion and property here and here.
