The Philadelphia 76ers Are One Sorry Franchise

The Philadelphia 76ers expected a season of promise with a big off-season trade. Now the franchise is on the verge of collapse.

We interrupt the start of the baseball season to report that another Philadelphia sports team won't be making the playoffs this year. So much for your Philadelphia 76ers. After a past few years of exciting new ownership, promising playoff victories and high-profile trades, the Sixers have sunk to the lowest depths of the four Philly sports franchises this year. The finger pointing is endless. This has been one disaster of a season. In the beginning of the year, the possibilities and promise were endless. The team, with numerous free agent signings and trades in the off-season, appeared prime to take off. With rising stars Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner leading the way, the Sixers added a dominant force in the middle that would allow them to …

This is a terrible draft, and the sixers will likely have th 12th pick or so. The only saving grace is that they aren't tied to major contracts, which is great. However, the free agency crop isn't that great either. Sure, Chris Paul is great, but he's not leaving LA. We will suck again next year.   more ›

Will Philly Sports Teams Improve in 2013?

Roster movements for Phillies, possible new coach for Eagles and maybe Andrew Bynum return for Sixers could spark rebound.

Rebounding, not rebuilding. That is hopefully the mindset of the owners of our four Philadelphia sports franchises as their teams head into 2013. First off, who knows when the NHL will return to play any games this year, but if so, the Philadelphia Flyers will make their usualy Stanley Cup run. The Philadelphia 76ers have fought hard so far this year, sparked by the young shooters Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner. But in order to get into the playoffs and maybe over the hump, getting center Andrew Bynum on board -- even for a month or so -- just might be enough to turn this team into an elite contender. Look what Moses Malone once did. Imagine a healthy Bynum marking his territory in the middle of the floor? The Philadelphia Eagles will end …

What is saddest is that even casual knowledge of the game--harbored by fans such as myself--would sustain such observations.   more ›

It's Painful Being Philly Fans These Days

There are major issues with all four Philadelphia sports teams, issues that are tearing apart the fan base.

The pain just won't go away. We Philadelphia sports fans are suffering with no hope for happiness as we head into the holiday season. The Philadelphia Eagles, once a regular playoff contender, have lost seven straight games going into a Sunday night game against the rival Dallas Cowboys. The Philadelphia Phillies, after falling apart last year, have yet to pull the trigger on a major free agent signing. The Philadelphia 76ers had hoped to have a big man in its lineup that would put the team over the top. And we don't have the Orange and Black to get us back because the Philadelphia Flyers are out of action with the hockey season on strike. There's also no relief in sight. And the bad news keeps piling up. In the past week, Philly sports …

Sixers Bouncing with Enthusiasm to Start Season

The Philadelphia 76ers had a great preseason. Now the team starts the season Wednesday with high hopes.

Philadelphia Phillies sportscaster Harry Kalas used to sing the song "High Hopes." That's the perfect song for the Philadelphia 76ers, who begin the start of the NBA season on Wednesday. With the Philadelphia Eagles struggling, the Phillies out of the playoffs and no hockey for the Flyers, the Sixers might be the proud son of the city. In other words, they might get lots of brotherly love. Even with star center Andrew Bynum sitting out the start with banged up knees, the Sixers team is perhaps the most talented and deepest in several years. The Sixers did a great job during the off-season acquiring key talent. They only return five players from last year's roster. But those five are key: Point Guard Jrue Holiday is a rising star, forward/…

Can Andrew Bynum Shine as Sixers Superstar?

The new center for the Philadelphia 76ers is expected to be the main attraction this year.

He's not Julius Erving. No one will ever be able to claim the fame that Dr. J. received when he joined the Philadelphia 76ers, leading them to an NBA Championship game in his first season in the mid-1970s. But can new acquisition Andrew Bynum be the next Sixers superstar? Based on the showing of Philly fans Wednesday for Bynum's press conference, this could be a match made in heaven. The center, acquired from the Los Angeles, will be the man here. And he may be it here longer if he decides to sign a contract extension. (Bynum is in the final year of his contract.) "My experience here so far has been great that I'm leaning toward making this my home," Bynum told the crowd, which screamed with excitement. Bynum has put up strong numbers as …
