Christmas "Angels" Return to TE This Year

Surprised and grateful shoppers are moved to tears by some big surprises.

Jacob Sanduka says "we call them angels."  Sanduka is a manager of the Big Kmart in Devon. He says people have been coming in since Black Friday and quietly paying off lay away accounts. "We had one yesterday, two the day before and four people said they are coming in tomorrot," Sanduka told TE Patch Wednesday evening. It was a big story last year when several similar angels at other Kmart stores around the country started catching the attention of the national news media. Several people did the same thing for lay away customers in Devon. The trend has gotten almost no media exposure this year, but Sanduka says many "Christmas angels" have been coming to the store in recent weeks. He tells Patch that the "angels" want to remain and …

Sears and Kmart Waive Layaway Fee Through Nov. 17

Retailers are launching a layaway war to kick off the 2012 holiday shopping season. See who else is battling for your business.

Sears and Kmart have announced they will waive lawaway fees in stores and online through Nov. 17, according to an Associated Press report. Both stores usually charge $5 for an eight-week layaway and $10 for 12 weeks. Kmart's move comes three days after Wal-Mart said it was lowering its holiday layaway program fee to $5 from $15. The Wal-Mart holiday layaway program starts Sept. 16 and runs through Dec. 14 and will include more items than last year. Shoppers will get a service charge refund via Wal-Mart gift card when they pay off their layaway purchase. Toys R Us Inc. is cutting an upfront service fee for layaway orders in store from Sept. 4 through Oct. 31. After Oct. 31, a $5 service fee will apply.

Layaway Angels Visit Devon Big K Kmart

Mystery "Secret Santa" spreads cheer in Devon Square.

Someone is going to get a nice surprise when they go to pay off their Christmas layaway at the Big K Kmart store in the Devon Square Shopping Center. The bill's already been paid.  A woman who did not identify herself spread the cheer that's been getting national attention when she walked into the Kmart Friday afternoon and plunked down $200 to pay off a total stranger's layaway bill. Assitant store manager Greg Alleyne tells Patch the woman asked to pay off a layaway account that included toys. "I think people associate kids with toys, and that may be why she asked for an account with toys," Alleyne said. By Friday at 6 p.m., the lucky gift recipient had not come in and had no idea of the surprise that awaits. It's a gift that had Alleyne…
