When it comes to fire, the Berwyn Fire Company is not playing with fire. They're using it to demonstrate the dangers many everyday items and activites can pose if you don't know what to watch out for. To make the point, the fire company will host an open house Saturday afternoon from 3-5:30 p.m.. The events include live fire demonstrations with a car, kitchen and model house being set on fire. The open house is part of the National Fire Safety activities going on in communities all over the country this month. September is National Preparedness Month and the Berwyn Fire Company is encouraging everyone to pledge to prepare for emergencies. According to an article posted on the Fire Company's website: This September marks the ninth annual NPM. This year's theme is "Pledge to Prepare - Awareness to Action". FEMA is asking the public -- individuals, business, and organizations -- to take specific action steps by doing at least one of the following: 1. Learn about emergency hazards - including home fires -and their appropriate responses 2. Make a communications plan 3. Build an emergency kit 4. Get involved in preparedness in their community. It has been described variously as creating a loud cracking and popping noise, dense smoke, and an intense smell.
