Hurricane Sandy was not only one of the biggest storms ever to hit the Northeast, it also was one of the costliest in terms of damage, power outtages and manpower. The Berwyn Fire Company mounted a massive effort in anticipation of the storm, staffing the station and a makeshift substation at the Tredyffrin Municipal Building during the height of the storm. According to a report on the Fire Company's website, the volunteers and paid first responders handled 47 calls in 46 hours, many overlapping. According to the report every piece of the company's firefighting and ambulance equipment was on the street at one point during the storm. It was "all hands on deck" as members of the fire company were on duty at the firehouse and Tredyffrin …

Berwyn Fire Company officials are asking TE residents who don't need to leave home today to stay put. There are several roads in the township with trees down or lights out, including several on Lancaster Avenue as of late morning. Berwyn Assistant Fire Chief Eamon Brazunas says walking around your neighborhood or local streets can also be dangerous with high winds still gusting in the area. He points out that high winds can pick up downed tree limbs and other debris and turn them into flying debris. For those who may be anxious to get out and walk or drive around he suggests the following: "Be Patient. Be Smart. Take a Break." He says using common sense is the best approach. Other requests from public safety officials today: Don't drive …

When it comes to fire, the Berwyn Fire Company is not playing with fire. They're using it to demonstrate the dangers many everyday items and activites can pose if you don't know what to watch out for. To make the point, the fire company will host an open house Saturday afternoon from 3-5:30 p.m.. The events include live fire demonstrations with a car, kitchen and model house being set on fire. The open house is part of the National Fire Safety activities going on in communities all over the country this month. One of the themes that will be stressed on Saturday is knowing two ways out of every room in your home in case of fire. A complete rundown of the day's activities, demonstration schedule and important fire safety reminders is …

This is National Fire Prevention week. Fire departments all over the country, including Berwyn, Paoli and Radnor are using the theme of this year's campaign to urge you to have two exits from every room in your home. At the center of the campaign is practicin family fire escape plans and making sure everyone in your home knows two ways to get out in case of fire. In most cases that means a door and window. It could be different for every room in every home, so fire departments urge you to actually make-and practice- family fire escape plans. You can read much more about how to plan and practice and what to think about NOW before disaster strikes here on the Berwyn Fire Company website. Fire Companies Plan Open Houses As part of their …
