Welch and Murphy Lose: PA Statewide Results

The endorsed candidates (one Republican, one Democrat) fail in two major statewide races.

Chester County businessman Steve Welch went into the primary election as the candidate endorsed by both the state and Chester County Republican Party committees. He lost. So did Democrat Attorney General candidate Patrick Murphy.

Pennsylvania U.S. Senate Primary Races

On the Republican ballot:

Former coal company owner Tom Smith won a five-man race for the Republican nomination, defeating a field that included Chester County businessman Steve Welch. Welch had the endorsement and was prominently displayed on the sample ballots Republican volunteers handed out at the polls in Tredyfrrin and Easttown Tuesday.

On the Democratic ballot:

In the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, incumbent Sen. Bob Casey of Lackawanna County easily defeated Joseph Vodvarka of Allegheny County by a four-to-one margin in the Democratic primary.

Vodvarka, who spent the evening with his family at his home, said he thought his message of fair trade resonated with voters who are concerned about jobs being shipped overseas. He blamed the media for not taking an interest in his campaign, pointing to stories about the Republican U.S. senate candidates and contending there had been a dearth of coverage of his candidacy.

“They mentioned everyone else, but they never said my name,” Vodvarka said. “The media avoided me like the plague.”

Pennsylvania Attorney General Races

Democrat voters go against state and county party endorsements

Kathleen Kane will be the Democrat candidate for Pennsylvania Attorney General in the November general election. Kane had the endorsement of the Easttown Democratic Committee. Her opponent, former Congressman Patrick Murphy, was endorsed by the Chester County and Tredyffrin Township Democratic Committees.

Murphy, an Iraq War Veteran is a former Montgomery County Congressman who was voted out of office in the 2010 Obama midterm election. He was a military prosecutor but has not taken the bar in Pennsylvania. He had high profile TV endorsements from Democrat heavy-hitters, including former Governor Ed Rendell who called Murphy "tough as nails" and U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz who touted his "100% pro-choice" stance on abortion in ads that ran heavily in Philadelphia TV stations.

Kane will now face Republican David Freed in the November general election race for Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Pennsylvania Auditor General

In the race for Pennsylvania Auditor General, state Rep. John Maher of Upper St. Clair easily defeated Dauphin County businessman Frank Pinto in the Republican primary.

"The voters declared today that Pennsylvania deserves an auditor for auditor general," Maher said during his victory speech at the  in Bethel Park.

Maher will face York County state representative Eugene DePasquale in November.
