PennDOT is urging people to become organ donors in honor of National Donate Life month, which is April.

All driver's license and state identifcation holders can have their organ donor status indicated on their ID, PennDOT said.

Just about 46 percent of Pennsylvania license and ID holders are organ donors, PennDOT said, which is more than 4.5 million people. Some 8,500 people in Pennsylvania currently are awaiting organ transplants.

“Potential donors can take action today to add the organ donor designation to their license or identification card, rather than waiting for renewal time,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said. “The 90 seconds you spend online requesting the designation for your license or identification card could potentially save a life.”

You don't have to pay a replacement ID fee to become an organ donor -- just visit www.dmv.state.pa.us and click on the "Donate Life Pennsylvania" icon. You'll be mailed a designation card to carry with your license or ID until it's time for you to get a new one.

the most important thing to do is to have the hard discussion w/ your family regarding YOUR wishes for being an organ donor. your family will be the one to make the decision for you if you are lying unconscious in an ER. if you dont have an advance directive in place and let your family know about it, simply having an organ donor status on your license wont mean a thing.
