Obama Endorses Same-Sex Marriage: PA Advocates Rejoice

President Obama made his historic pronouncement during an interview with ABC News.

President Barack Obama has publicly come out in support of gay marriage, the first time in history that a sitting U.S. President has ever done so.

Obama, who during the last presidential election stated that he opposed gay marriage, gave the news to ABC News' Robin Roberts in an interview that will air on ABC's “Good Morning America" on Thursday.

"I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Roberts.

The news comes just days after Vice President Joe Biden said he supports gay marriage.

Pennsylvania Reaction

“[W]e believe it truly represents what so many Americans are really feeling about LGBT relationships. His evolution is not unlike the experiences of thousands of people who have come to know that the struggles, the triumphs, the ups and the downs of LGBT couples are remarkably like their own. In fact, they are the same,” Equality Pennsylvania posted to its Facebook page Wednesday as part of a statement applauding the president for his support.

“Now that the President has spoken out, expect most, though certainly not all Democrats in the Senate to speak out too,” posted Gay Marriage for Pennsylvania to its Facebook page Wednesday with a link to an article about Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid joining Obama’s support for gay marriage.

However, some do not share the president's new view on gay marriage. Dave Norris, a retired steelworker and registered Democrat, told the Associated Press that he does not support same-sex marriage.

"I would hope it would hurt him, but in today's society, there's nothing sacred," Norris said of the president's recent public statement.

While Republican Gov. Tom Corbett has not yet made a public statement in regards to the president's interview, he does not support same-sex marriage and the Republican-controlled Legislature has not approved any bills in favor of gay marriage.

Sens. Casey and Toomey

The announcement increases pressure on other Democrats, such as U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (PA) to support equality in marriage. Equality Pennsylvania President, Adrian Shanker, 25, of Bethlehem, told the Morning Call that his organization will continue to push the issue.

Casey told The Philadelphia Jewish Voice in 2005 that he does not support gay marriage, but would not support a constitutional amendment to ban it. U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) voted in favor of a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Our founding fathers went to great length to make sure there was a separation from religion and state so I am not sure i understand where god has much to do with the constitution or the premise for your argument. However I do seem to recall the bible saying to trust your government for his will shall be done through them. Not a literal quote but a paraphrase.

The topic is gay marriage and whether you support Obama’s endorsement. While Patch provides an environment for healthy discussion, if the discussion can’t rise above the insults and name calling, the discussion will be closed.
Jim May 15, 2012 at 08:05 am
Sandy your the person that resorted to name calling. You called me a idiot a moron, and said "I just crawled out from under a rock". You so twisted you don't even know what you said. I called you a fool, because you can't defend yourself properly so you start to name call.. That's all you got. All talk and no substance.
Bob Byrne (Editor) May 15, 2012 at 10:16 am
Despite all the impassioned rhetoric here, I am curious about something. Will you vote for a presidential candidate based on this issue or is the economy a bigger reason in your opinion to vote for one presidential candidate or another?

you go to the well with a pail and discover that there is no water. So you go back with a ladle and still, no water - so you bring a cup and still........... there is no water. stop going to the well. Jim is that empty well and nothing can be gained. Stop going to the well.
Jim May 15, 2012 at 01:56 pm
The well is to deep and you brought nothing to draw the water with just wondering.
Morgan King May 15, 2012 at 03:14 pm
Bob Byrne - I was going to vote for Obama regardless, but I'm pretty excited that he's been so active about the subject since this comment brought so much attention - I love that he's embracing it rather than stepping back from it. I really thought that it was just going to be a passing comment, but actively seeking the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act is fantastic - even Republicans (at least the ones that aren't total hypocrites) should be thrilled that it gives the power to decide back to the States (right, guys?).

The States will be in favor of same sex marriage, but the Federal court will overide the states, It will end up Supreme Court who will throw Same Sex Marriage to the pig stii where it belongs. If the states had any guts they would enforce the sodomy law, which is still on the books, and throw some of these F.B. in jail
Morgan King May 15, 2012 at 06:55 pm
Except the complete opposite of that is what is going to happen - most of the states will reject it (as we've seen so far) only to have it enforced by the Supreme Court, just like it happened with civil rights for blacks in the 60s to force breaking down 'separate but equal' policies. Also, there have been no sodomy laws in the US since 2003.Anyway, the Supreme Court exists to apply, by law, rights to all Americans equally. You have the right to marry the adult you want to marry, and so should every other American.
That's how freedom works - if you want to live in a Theocracy, you are in the wrong country.
Jim May 15, 2012 at 10:12 pm
Freedom of choice does give a United States citizen the right to degrade somebody of the same sex. When a person of authority (scout master, priest) sexually abuses a child, it's a felony. Most of the abusers are gay, and a lot of the abused children, grow up to have gay relationship, that only confuses there loved ones, and themselves. Freedom, is not a right to explore every form of disgusting behavior. Freedom is the courage to do the right thing, no matter whats the cost. Morgan King your definition of Freedom is very, very, weak.Nobody can teach you how to be free in law school Morgan King. Your still a little wet behind the ears! The laws in the United States are directly connected to Gods laws. Morgan you better go back to the law books. I hope you don't practice civil law. If you do, your clients better run, fast!

Dear Patch Editors,
Shut this blog down. Please.

"The laws in the United States are directly connected to Gods laws."
Like I said, if you want to live in a Theocracy, you are in the wrong country. Laws in the United States are created by humans, and, moreover, explicitly state that Congress may make no law respecting an establishment of religion, no matter how much you might wish it was otherwise.
Jim May 16, 2012 at 01:21 am
The Laws of the United States were firmly established way before we became a country. Seperation of Church and State was established back during the rein of Henery the eighth. Laws that have been set forth in Biblical times are the backbone of American Justice System. Morgan King your trying to tie the laws of this county together with this Theocracy pant load.
Ike May 16, 2012 at 01:46 am
If you think about it , it s kind of sick.
Morgan King May 16, 2012 at 04:29 am
Maybe you are unfamiliar with the term - basically, it's when one particular religion's moral code is treated as law for all the people of that populace. You believe that your interpretation of your religion's moral code should be the legal basis for determining the rights of citizens of this country, no? If you think your religion should determine the laws of a country, that is a Theocracy. If you think the people should vote on the laws of their own country, that's a Democracy. You may have missed it, but this country has been a Democracy since the Revolutionary War (and the moral demands of a particular religion have been barred from holding legal power here since the 1st Amendment.
Why is that? Because law is built on consistency - if I walked up to you and smacked your face, there is a legacy of consistent and enforced guidelines for how that assault is legally resolved. Religion, however, is built on faith that you'll know, regardless of man's law, how to handle being slapped in the face. The problem is, it's completely inconsistent - do you slap me back, an eye for an eye, or do you stoically turn the other cheek? If two gay adults want to share their lives with each other, and enjoy the legal benefits that go along with that, do you support them and 'love your neighbor as yourself,' as in Mark 12, or do you follow Leviticus 20 and make sure they are 'put to death'? How can a man pick and choose which of God's commands to follow? How can you ignore any of them?
Wynnewoodie May 16, 2012 at 12:12 pm
Jim, you are spectacularly uninformed! "Seperation (sic) of Church and State was established back during the rein(sic) of Henery (sic) the eighth"? You've got it exactly backwards! Henry VIII broke with the Roman Catholic Church (over the subject of annulment) and declared himself (and future Kings of England) head of the Church of England. In other words, Henry VIII didn't separate church and state, he unified them. For the record, that's called a theocracy. Oh, and it's expressly forbidden by the first amendment of the US Constitution.
Jim May 16, 2012 at 12:26 pm
God laws are our Laws, you don't have a choice. If you think Murder, assault, rape are legal, than your saying anything like most gay men do, to justify sodomy. You were in the right book, Levitcus, Morgan; if those laws were in affect today everbody would be a lawbreaker and gay people would be stoned to death by thier neighbors. God burned his laws on a tablet called the ten commandmets.maybe you have heard of them Morgan, they are mans laws, and is called Religon, and if you don't follow the laws, you, and I, and everbody else on this earth, will be judged if we break those laws.
Bob May 16, 2012 at 01:06 pm
"God's laws" are really man's laws, created by men for men. God has nothing to do with it. Believe what you want to believe but don't try to force everyone else to believe your fairy tales. The Old Testament condones slavery so does that make it right? Of course not. God did this, God did that? oh really, where is the proof? Of that's right, He only appears to one man either on the top of a mountain or out in a desert or to a select few believers? How convenient. That is so only a select few have control over the word and with it, the power to control society and make money. Discuss morality all you want as it is totally separate from religion. Just keep religion out of the public square because all it ever does is polute the discussion.
MJP May 16, 2012 at 01:29 pm
The economy, Afghanistan, the Federal budget, the upcoming insolvency of social security, the environment, all issues that are more important than gay marriage. The candidate that is best able to address, and rectify these issues gets my vote.
MJP May 16, 2012 at 01:32 pm
Did Jim really comment that most pedophiles are gay? Did Jim also state the most victims of child abuse "grow up to be gay"? Wow, talk about being out of touch, uninformed and just plain wrong.

The back and forth agruments are usless. Those who stand for thier fundamentalist religious belief can not see another point of view. They rely on ancient teachings to cast opinions onto others and how they live. The fact of the matter is that gay people have been around since the dawn of time. they continue to live in our society and remain productive citizens. They are your neighbors, fmaily, friends and fellow citizens. Those who do not share a zealots religous opinion should not be made to share it. freedom is just that and the freedom for gay people to love and marry should not be into a religious argument all the time. I'm a proud lesbian woman and am not in love with anyone right now, biut drream of my wedding day just like many other girls do. My wedding will include two brides..they only diffrence...

No Jim,
Another point of view. There are some people as hard for you to understand, don't live in fear of being stuck down. let me deal with my own god and you can have yours. men who murder or committ crimes are criminals...those men who love other men are gay. Simple even for you to understand....
Jim May 16, 2012 at 08:52 pm
Sjeffries, I respect other people point of view, and I tolerate anybody life style and treat people with dignity People should not have to, ever live in fear, but the truth is really scary
Morgan King May 17, 2012 at 03:03 am
So which is it? Do you follow the commandment 'Thou shalt not kill,' or do you follow 'If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman... they are to be put to death'? Both are commands given directly from God to Moses, and yet they directly contradict each other. How can you follow those commands without choosing one or the other?
AnnaC May 17, 2012 at 12:24 pm
What is there to fear from people who are gay???
