When Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger became pope, no one more than more elated than I to see a non-Italian become the leader of the catholic church. In my eyes, Ratzinger was the perfect candidate for the job of chief shepherd of the flock in the large catholic community that spans all the continents of the world.
Pope Benedict XVI by all accounts, was my favorite. But then, something happened when he was connected with the sex scandal in Ireland and Germany with some assertions that to some extent, he was implicated in the abuse of children in those countries.
This revelation, shocked me because, I had embraced this new pope as being different from all the other popes that came before him. To me, Pope Benedict XVI was what the world needed at the time when the large catholic community needed to find answers to what was going on with the children of the world being abused everywhere.
I was one of those who believed that this pope would finally make a difference. Well, the crisis soon passed and today, hearing of Pope Bendict's resignation, my faith has been renewed once again because here we have the most powerful man in the world (definetely in the catholic church), whose convictions about what is right and wrong are stronger than ever.
Pope Benedict XVI by resigning his post showed the world that he is truly a man of principle and convictions. He would rather rise into obscurity than to compromise his principles in a world that is constantly changing (and not for the better). Pope benedict is a pope for all seasons in every sense of the word.
Pope Benedict by his decision to resign his post showed me and the world that he more than anyone else in Rome or anywhere in the world, cares more about the people than he cares about himself.
I will always hold this pope as the standard for all the popes, past, present and future. Pope Benedict XVI truly deserves the Keys of the Kingdom.
Pope Benedict XVI, just as another great religious leader in the protestant faith, Billy Graham SR. is one of a kind.
