37 years ago Yong Yang and his daughter moved to the United States from South Korea to pursue their American Dream. 14 years ago Yang ventured out from Philadelphia where he had built a successful produce business in a very competitive marketplace to open his own farmers market in Berwyn. On January 18 in the parking lot of his suburban market, 'Mr. Yang' (as everyone calls him) was robbed, attacked, and left without sight in his left eye.
Now Yong Yang is selling the Berwyn farmer's market that bears his name.
The buyer is no stranger, he's Yang's long time employee and former son in-law Mark Morroney.
The official announcement came from Yang's daughter Chae (who managed the market for several years before opening her own Yoga business) and current son in-law John Bullock.
In a press release sent to Patch announcing the sale, Yang's family says:
Long-time Yang’s Market employee and local resident, Mark Morroney, and Mr. Yang have signed an agreement that will transfer ownership of Yang’s Market to Mark Morroney.
As a result of the January 18, 2012 attack outside Yang’s Market, Mr. Yang suffered serious eye injuries, and as such he has been unable to drive or to run the daily operations of the Market.
Mark Morroney has worked at Yang’s Market for the over the past decade providing the community with produce, dry goods, his owned prepared foods and catering services. During the past 1 ½ months, Mark has increased his responsibilities at the Market by running the day-to-day operations, as well as, going to the food distribution center in South Philadelphia.
Mr. Yang will assist Mark in the transition by continuing to provide his knowledge and service for a couple of hours each day.
Both Mr. Yang and Mark are excited about their new roles as the community will continue to receive the finest produce, dry goods, prepared foods and catering that have been the tradition of Yang’s Market.
Yang’s Market is located at 573 Lancaster Avenue, Berwyn, PA and is open Monday to Saturday.
