Presented by Deirdre Gibson, Chief of Planning and Resource Management for Valley Forge National Historic Park

Valley Forge is the national park in your backyard, yet how well do you really know it? The park we see today is the product of thousands of years of repeated cycles of destruction and recovery that began with prehistoric megafauna, and continued through deforestation, war, industrial pollution on a massive scale, preservation and commemoration, and now suburbanization and climate change. This illustrated talk focuses on the remarkable story of the landscape here and the aggressive work now underway to restore not only the historic landscape but also the environmental health of this resilient and beloved place.

Deirdre Gibson has served as the Chief of Planning and Resource Management for Valley Forge National Historic Park (NHP) since 2002, and oversees preservation of historic landscapes, archeology, historic collections and natural resources, as well as planning for capital improvements, and transportation for the park. She holds a BS in Landscape Architecture from Pennsylvania State University and an MS in Landscape Architecture and Planning with Highest Honors from Harvard University. She has received numerous awards for her work, and last year received the Stephen Tyng Mather Award from the National Parks Conservation Association for her courage and commitment in ensuring preservation of Valley Forge NHP.
