World Premiere Musical Set to Open in Berwyn

The Main Line's oldest community theater will debut the world's newest musical this weekend.

"Places!" is the cue every actor hears before the curtain rises on live theater.

This weekend the curtain rises on playwright/composer Danny Scott's world premiere musical "Places!" at Footlighters Theater in Berwyn.

It's a full-fledged original musical with original songs written by Scott who describes the plot as "about a group of everyday people who come together as strangers and form an amazing bond of friendship."

A Broadway-caliber show in Berwyn

The show features 16 musical numbers that Scott says have everything "from toe tappiing numbers to soft ballads." The cast ranges in age from grade school to 60 and includes a broadway veteran who spent years in the cast of A Chorus Line.

The family that does plays together

The production is a labor of love for Scott and his family. His wife Sue is the producer and daughter Abigail, a high school junior is in the cast. Scott himself is not only the playwright, lyriscist and composer, he is also serving as musical director.

Scott donated this production of his show as a fundraiser for Footlighters, the oldest community theater on the Main Line. Not only is Scott donating the royalties for the original cast production to the theater, he also took to the internet to seek funds for having the score arranged. (Scott also has a couple full time jobs outside the theater and arranging a broadway-level musical score is a huge job.

The effort raised more than $3,000 to cover the cost of an arranger to help with some of the score. You can see more about that aspect of this unique approach to funding a musical score on the kickstarter.com website.
