Unpopular Speed Humps Gone At Gateway

They were the subject of angry comments when they were installed last summer.

Now even the gentler second generation of speed humps are gone at Gateway Shopping Center.

The reason behind the removal of the speed humps, which had been made gentler after drivers expressed anger over the impact of the original speed humps on car suspensions, was not immediately clear.

An eagle-eyed Patch reader and driver alerted Patch to the disappearance of the kinder, gentler, yet still bumpy speed bumps on Monday.

The original speed bumps were installed last summer to help slow traffic in the shopping center. The 'speed hump 10mph' signs and white warning arrows are still in place. Only the prefabricated rubber bumps are missing.

You can see where they left their marks in the blacktop. Patch is looking into the story behind this story and will report details as they become available.

Do you think Gateway needs speed bumps or are you happy to see them removed? Tell us in the comments at the bottom of this article.

I am glad they are gone, the traffic directly in front of the stores got a lot heavier due to people avoiding the speed bumps and I think that made the shopping center a lot more dangerous then before.

I noticed that they were gone the other day when I drove through there. The amount of bumps was a bit excessive. I think if they had a couple on the outer road, it'd be ok. But when they had them every 20ft or so, it was maddening.

I didn't mind the speed bumps at all. They had a gentle roll about them and served a purpose. Of course I had no idea what extent people were going to to avoid them. Sheesh. What's the rush?

No doubt removed because of plowing and will likely be replaced once the risk of snow is over. I wasn't aware that they were damaged and assumed that they had been removed intentionally.

Speed bumps there are 100% not necessary This is not a residential neighborhood. This is not a place where pedestrians are walking all the time. All these did was to mess up our cars and be damn annoying. I never saw people really speeding there.
