Radnor Township wore its most patriotic colors this morning. The flag waving and revelry began shortly before 10 a.m. as parade participants proceeded along Lancaster Avenue, and ended on a more solemn note at the War Memorial on South Wayne Avenue. “Memorial Day is arguably one of America’s most important holidays,” Col. David R. Gray (Retired) of the Valley Forge Military Academy and College told hundreds of people who had gathered at the Ranor Township War Memorial on South Wayne Avenue. Among the Veterans who make it a point to honor fallen soldiers at the Radnor Memorial Day observances is Jack Fitzgerald of Devon. Fitzgerald, 88, served as a Staff Sergeant in World War II . He fought in the first and last battles of the war. He was hit by machine gun fire and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He was also awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in the Battle for Okinawa. After World War II, Fitzgerald returned home but was called back to active duty as a First Lieutenant for the 7th Army Division in Korea. The flag at the entrance to Wilson Farm Park was photographed at sunset on Sunday. Tredyffrin-Easttown Patch Memorial Day coverage features the memorials thousands of people walk or drive past every day in Berwyn and Paoli but  may have never taken a moment to visit. Federal, state, and township offices are closed today in observance of the holiday.
