Curious about your heritage? Everyone in the community is welcome to come to Main Line Genealogy Club to hear a great presentation by Jim Bartlett* entitled:
DNA- The Newest Tool for Genealogists: Y-DNA, mtDNA, and Family Finder Tests
This presentation will provide simple explanations of how DNA works – no biology needed. You will learn how to use DNA test results to learn more about your surname line and your all-female ancestry; the genealogies of your ancestors; finding biological fathers; linking SURNAME tree branches; and discovering your ancestry before records, including Deep Ancestry. Included are DNA tests for your all-male ancestry; for your all-female ancestry; and the newest test, for men or women, that reports DNA links with your cousins from all of your ancestors.
The plan is that Jim will give a basic class for about 50 minutes and then have a Q&A session and any discussion of issues or applications attendees want - as advanced as they want.
Join us at the Easttown Library in Berwyn on Thursday, February 17th from 1 to 3 pm. $5 donation suggested.
*Jim Bartlett has been active in genealogy since 1974. In October 2002 he began the BARTLETT-DNA Project to see if the Richmond Co, VA BARTLETTs and the Culpeper Co, VA BARTLEYs had a common ancestor (they did!). This project has now grown to over 200 participants and has identified 19 separate BARTLETT lines – none of which relate to the others for over 1,000 years. The project has identified two positive links back to England, and the biological fathers of 4 “non-paternity events” in BARTLETT lines from the late 1700s. Jim has worked with other SURNAME researchers to start their own DNA Projects, and has explained the simplicity and power of DNA as a Genealogy Tool in the DC, VA, MD, WV area. Jim is also researching other DNA projects to determine the male (Y) and female (mt) DNA of as many of his ancestral lines as possible to determine just what kind of mutt he really is. Since 2010 he has been involved with the newest DNA tool (Family Finder) which provides matches with cousins from any/all of your ancestors. He enjoys teaching and sharing, and hopes his talks will provide tools and insights to help everyone with their genealogical research.
