Welcome back, Patch Blogger!

What's Going to Happen to Devon Barnes & Noble?

Patch gets answers as bookstore chain announces plans for mass closings.

Do you still go to Barnes & Noble bookstores?

Apparently not enough people do nationwide.

Company executives told the Wall Street Journal they plan to close 20 stores a year over the next decade.

Also Tuesday on TE Patch:

While no specific stores have been identified yet for closure, at least not publicly, the bookstore giant has already made some decisions.

A spokeswoman for the Barnes & Noble on Swedesford Road in Devon says that store is not closing or going anywhere.

In an email response to an inquiry from TE Patch, Barnes & Noble Community Relations Manager Maureen Montecchio said "Our Jenkintown store closed in January.  The Willow Grove store is located very close to that location, so that store can serve our Jenkintown customers quite nicely.  I am not aware of plans to close any other stores in the Philadelphia market."

Do you still use bookstores - or do you do all your reading on a computer?

Tell us in the comments.

it isn't enough to browse. If you want BnN to stay open, patronize them. become a member. buy a book, cup of coffee, or a movie.

I still use bookstores!Everytime I drive by that store the
parking ot is full. I believe people still like to hold to hold
a book in their hand! I love that store. When I can spend
hours looking around! I worked at a store that closed
(Waterloo Gardens) and it is tragic.

Thanks. I still go to B&N. It would be a huge loss for the neighborhood.

I use bookstores, but not as much since books are so expensive and I read a lot. For travel I put books on ipad. I use the library much more than before.

Bob, You're a little late with this. B&N made the announcement on Jan 28th. Many of their leased locations will not have their leases renwed. I believe B&N owns our Devon location as it's not located within a shopping center or strip mall. And judging from the number of cars I see in their lot and across in front of Big Lots & PetSmart, I think they'd be crazy to close unless they went into bankruptcy.

I find our Devon B&N busy and convenient. I would think it is profitable from all the gifts we purchase every year, including gift certificates (pre-profit)! The UPenn B&N most likely does not have as much volume as Devon! We invest in books always.
