Berwyn Woman, 65, Busted in Theft Inside Bank

Police say she took something from inside a bank branch, but it wasn't money.

NEWTOWN SQUARE– Newtown Township Police police say they caught a woman suspected in the theft of a pair of $450 prescription sunglasses at TD Bank in Newtown Square on July 30.

According to the police incident report, a customer left a pair of sunglasses on a counter after writing a check. When the customer returned from the teller window the glasses were gone.

According to police, security video shows another woman with a dog  picking up the sunglasses and placing them in her purse before going to the teller window.

The woman with the dog was identified as a 65-year-old woman from Berwyn. Police have not released her name.

On Aug. 26, police questioned her about the July 30 sunglasses that disappeared at the TD Bank in Newtown Square. Police say the woman responded, "I took the sunglasses."

The woman faces three misdemeanor charges of Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition; Theft of Property Lost, Mislaid, or Delivered; and Receiving Stolen Property.

What about the old saying . . . Finders keepers, Losers weepers. Why is the finder charged with offenses? She didn't actually steal the sunglasses. They were inadvertently left as in lost and she found them. I'm just saying. . .

This article is an absolute shame. First, the title is misleading. Second, how do we know if the woman accidentally placed the glasses in her purse as opposed to stealing them? To post her picture here with this headline is shameful.

The woman faces charges of misdemeanor theft. The information came from and is attributed to Newtown Square Police who provided the photo to the media. She is presumed innocent pending the outcome of the case.

The title is ridiculous! However, the law is that you must make an attempt to find the owner so the old adage of "Finders keepers,Losers weepers" is only meant for those that are able to feel less guilty by saying it.

My first thought was that the woman was caught while in the process of robbing the bank!

I " lost" my keys at Saxby's in Paoli and it cost me. $400 to replace. Somebody accidental picked them up off counter. They don't need to go to jail. BTW why does she have the dog in the bank?

In this case the charges are misdemeanors and while the case has not been adjudicated, misdemeanor charges don't usually end up in jail time. That would be up to prosecutors and the judge to decide after (and only if) a guilty verdict was the outcome. Again, she is presumed innocent until found otherwise through the courts.
