It's all about the TV images and the best way to see the stage from the press risers is through the zoom lens on the video cameras which are raised above the heads of the crowd.

Modern presidential campaign rallys are designed on two levels. Energizing the crowds who come to see the candidates, and making the event look great on TV.
As election day draws closer, the crowds and press ranks swell at each event. Friday afternoon hundreds of Romney supporters packed a ballroom at Valley Forge Military Academy and College and an adjacent overflow area.
Dozens of media cameras also packed the two tiered risers set up at the back of the room, designed to be high enough to see over the heads of the people who filled the ballroom from wall to wall.
